Arethusa revisted

Today in Syracuse we had a grand tour of the area thanks to Davide Tanasi from University of Arcadia.  Big thanks to Davide who was incredibly knowledgeable and generous with his time.  We saw far too much to mention in a single blog post.

We passed by the fountain of Arethusa (as I mentioned in my previous blog post)!  It was great to see it in real life and learn some of the details not so easy to come by.  For example we learned that the plants in the middle of the fountain are actually papyrus.

Continuing on to the Paolo Orsi Archaeological Museum we saw many awesome exhibits including a very large collection of coins.  Here again Arethusa was present.  Historically, the currencies of Malta all featured Arethusa on one side accompanied by dolphins with a horse and chariot on the other side
