The Fountain of Arethusa
As Lauren mentioned in her earlier post, we are hoping to see some archaeological sites while in Syracuse. One of those sites is the Fountain of Arethusa. In greek mythology Arethusa was a daughter of Nereus. While under the enamored pursuit by Alpheus, a river god and now river in Greece, Arethusa was changed into a spring by Artemis. Arethusa soon surfaced in the the isle of Ortygia, in today's city of Syracuse. Alpheus then changed into a river and merged with the spring of Arethusa.
According to legend, cups thrown into the river Alpheus will cross flow through the underground passages of the river and later appear in the fountain Arethusa.
