Exploring Sliema Sea Caves!

Today we split up into two groups, one for outreach and one to gather more sonar data. Ian, Jeff, Spencer, and I were on ROV duty and we went to some sea caves off the promenade in Sliema (near our apartment).

Setting up the ROV
We had trouble collecting good data because of the strong currents. We were able to take several sonar scans but we won't be to reconstruct the caves from the data we obtained. We are hopeful that we can return in week 4 to map the caves when we have the smart tether (an alternate tether that helps determine the robot's location).

Robot entering the caves!
Since the first cave had too strong of currents we moved to another cave which appeared to have weaker currents and would be more suitable for robot exploration. We still weren't able to get good scans, but we did find some stairs with the video on the ROV.

It was a beautiful day and I am excited about the possibility of going back to the caves another day!
