First Glimpses of 3D Reconstructions

Today Spencer and I took to the task of making the 3D occupancy grids of some sonar data that was taken last Tuesday at Tal Gruwa Cistern #14. In the past, we have only been able to produce 3D reconstructions of two cisterns. This year, we have collected enough data to produce three 3D maps just in the first week! A snapshot of the first map is below.

This cistern was more of a test; it is quite plain, but still has a varying 3D cross section. Now that we have the algorithm working, for the rest of the day Spencer and I will be working on producing a 3D map of a much more intricate and interesting cistern from Tal Gruwa which we collected data for last Thursday (Cisterns 3/4). We will then run the maps through our reconstruction algorithms to produce meshes to give to the archaeologists.

Stay tuned, more 3D to come!
